La Son is a tranquil oasis, away from the hubbub of every day life, in a quiet, rural part of the Languedoc, between Toulouse and Carcassonne. It is situated 3km outside the medieval village of St Papoul, at the foot of the Black Mountains in Cathar country. The house and gardens face south to the Pyrennes, providing stunning views on a clear day.
La Son was once a retreat for nuns and it provides a place for reflection and perspective. It is now a family home, decorated and furnished in keeping with the house and area. It will accommodate a group of adults looking to get away for a birthday treat or cultural tour; or one or two families with children. The grounds and woods are great fun for children to explore and roam in.
In the local area, there is much to do - Toulouse and Carcassonne (with La Cite); traditional markets (Revel has one of the best in the region); medieval abbeys and Cathar castles to visit; various lakes and woodland in the Black Mountains to explore; and the beautiful Canal du Midi to walk, cycle along. Further afield, there's the vineyards of the Minervois and Corbieres; the Pyrennes; and the Mediterranean coast at Narbonne with Beziers and Agde/Sete to the north and Perpignan to the South.
Information on the local area and maps are available at the house. St Papoul (3 minutes) has a bakery, pharmacy, excellent butcher's, small tabac and bar. The local market town at Castelnaudary (15 minutes) provides a full range of facilities, including supermarkets and a variety of restaurants, including a popular market. |
